*snakeskin print bikini c/o simplybeach.com, turquoise necklace c/o vanessa mooney, vintage shorts, harley davidson boots

lots to say today!

simplybeach.com sent me this amazing/perfect bikini a couple weeks back, and between the weather and my schedule, today was the first day i was able to wear it. i love it so much, and it goes oh so well with my hair (i bit the bullet and used manic panic).

vanessa mooney sent me the turquoise necklace, as well as a few other beautiful pieces, a couple weeks back as well. i've worn this necklace literally every single day since receiving it. it was hard for me not to beg them to just send me the entire collection. i actually just watched madeline freak out over all of it for a good 20 minutes the other day.

i have a little interview up on nosyeux. if you're interested, you can read it here.

---

i really wanted to touch on what's been going on in my head lately, because it is directly related to this blog. i'm going through a big lifestyle change, which includes: health, spiritual, and mental growth. while taking a break from the internet this last week and really starting to focus on looking inward, i almost decided to delete this thing completely. this has happened many times before, as i've always had an incredible amount of qualms about fashion blogging. i think it's narcissistic and can be done for all the wrong reasons. it literally sickens me to see fashion bloggers with thousands upon thousands of followers who use their voice PURELY for the sake of furthering themselves and their fashion careers. i feel that when you have any sort of audience that slightly pays attention to things you say, you have a moral obligation to try to include meaningful, insightful, or knowledgable content. an example of this would of course be madeline of jean greige- she does the standard (amazing) outfit post, discusses fashion, but then also manages to create very important dialogues about feminism, politics, or cultural appropriation (just to name a few).
what all of this rambling means:
it's been a dream of mine for awhile now to use this blog to do something that will benefit others instead of just myself. i have a lot of ideas bouncing around my bluegreen-haired head, but the first one i'm going to focus on is creating a group of bloggers who love and care about animals as much as i do. this group will not change anything about their blogging pattern or style- they will simply include/begin dialogue, suggest donations for charities, or just help create awareness in general. something i'm very passionate about is helping to feed/spay/neuter/treat the animals of the homeless population (i will go into much more detail about this later). madeline and i discussed everything over lunch today, and it's something i'll be really figuring out over the next week or so. if you're interested in becoming part of this blogger coalition, please let me know in the comments so i can start a list of people i'll be contacting. i'm not expecting much of a response yet, as i've just typed a bunch of half-formed thoughts underneath a bunch of half-naked photos, but i just thought it'd put it out there.

Hey Brit, I do understand your frustrations with the potential narcissism of blogging, however, I don't receive your blog in that way at all! Im really interested in hearing your view points and takes on serious issues. I think I read in one of madeline's tweets that you carry round a bag of dogfood for strays, such a simple yet amazing idea, definatley going to start that one. Although I guess you never really get a true idea of someone through the internet, you just seem like such an awesome person! Keep me posted on your ideas, good luck x

Brit, this is a brilliant idea! I'd love to be a part of whatever you come up with. If it involves helping animals, I'm so down.

I know what you mean Britney. I have some of the same qualms about fashion blogging sometimes. For me, it is a social and creative outlet. I have three kids, a full time job, a fiance and I am planning a wedding on top of it. I don't get much "me" time. Most of the time, I just talk about what happened in my day or what is going on in my life. Which, really is a truly narcissistic approach, but I have been known to talk about a lot of "touchy" subjects that I am very passionate about beyond clothes, like domestic violence, the tribulations of raising kids in a two parent household, same sex marriage, legalizing marijuana and other things. I can always tell those that actually read my posts and those that don't (*talk about my experiences in an abusive relationship*, get a comment like "wow love your belt!"). To be honest, it doesn't much bother me. I mean, some people are really just on here for inspiration as to what to wear and that is fine. My biggest love for blogging, however, lies in the wide realm of those that style blog--all body types, all budgets, all styles. My style is pretty different from those of you and Madeline (also a HUGE fan, so much so in fact that I emailed her thanking her for doing a post on being perfectly fine being small chested, as I also am, before I ever even actually started blogging, she has inspired me in many of my posts), but I love to read them because you two are so inspirational, if for nothing else than as two aspiring business women trying to pursue careers that you love on your own. I find you both to be, of course, beautiful and stylish, but also admire you because you are no bullshit. You talk about things beyond "check out my awesome boots that I got for free from some expensive line!!!!" (sooooo many exclamation marks!!). I urge you to continue blogging, but on a selfish front. I am very excited to see your blog evolve into whatever it does. Best of luck to you. Sorry for the long comment.

Hi Brit,
I've been a fan for a while but have rarely left comments but I have to say that I loved reading this post. I have a fairly new blog and I've been having trouble figuring out just what I want to share and in what way. I don't consider myself a "fashion blogger" because I don't necessarily take the time to share much of my own outfits. I really want my blog to be a place where people of all kinds can to find inspiration in each other(that's how I came up with the name for my blog)share ideas and maybe come across something they never knew about before, and yes also to see some cool clothes, kick ass jewelry and some beautiful art. I guess it sounds all over the board but when I started all of it i didn't want it to be all about me like you mentioned. I just started reading 'A New Earth' (Eckhart Tolle) and I think I just read that EXACT quote you put up. I try really hard to notice when the Universe is trying to tell me something or sending me a sign and I will take your post as chance for new possibilities, for a better sense of direction on my blog (and my tiny part in the internet world) so that I don't lose my self or become consumed by the egoic nature of doing what I'm trying to do. Good luck with everything and I hope I can join you in doing something new and meaningful. i'm a huge animal lover myself :)

this post has just made me admire you even more. I really agree with what you had to say about bloggers that have a significant audience also have the responsibility to use this to good use; show that they have real content to their posts and spread awareness like you are discussing doing. I can't wait to see what you have coming up.

hahaha -- "i'm not expecting much of a response yet, as i've just typed a bunch of half-formed thoughts underneath a bunch of half-naked photos, but i just thought it'd put it out there." that's so good. okay, i'm in! i agree with EVERYTHING you've said.. the fact that bloggers who have so many followers don't try to slightly improve or educate others on some topics really pisses me off. i am guilty, but i know i don't have a large fan base.. if any at all, but i still try and incorporate some important stuff into my posts, ya know?

although this is completely unrelated, i am drooling over your hair.. it's so mermaid-like!

Why don't you start a blogger coalition where bloggers pose with their pets? This way, bloggers can present their own creativity, and in the meantime, instead of promoting other brands they promote the aforementioned concerns with animals. I think it would be for a great cause (and this way we don't lose you as an amazing and inspiring fashion blogger)

word. SO DOWN. I'm always carrying food to give to homeless people, but apparently my ass didn't ever think about their animals. lets unite and feed both species. also currently fighting the 'delete the blog/stop internet-ing" urge, and completely on board to make some less superficial collaboration happen.

Oh my gosh Britney, you are amazing. And nothing about you or your blog EVER comes across as being narcissistic. Although, I totally agree that fashion blogging can lean in that direction...which is why I love that so many fashion bloggers nowadays use their blogs to talk about issues that are important to them, and foster a sense of community where engaged discussion can happen. I think your idea is brilliant! I can't wait to hear more! I'm with Casey, I'm all about ethical food production...I'm starting to learn about urban farming and after I move this summer planning to grow a huge garden and hopefully raise backyard chickens!

I would absolutely love to be involved in the coalition, or at the very least on some sort of email list alerting bloggers to what they can do for animals. I'm absolutely in love with all the earth's creatures, and would love to help in any way I can.

On a sartorial note, that bikini is PERFECT on you. Like, wow.

Oh my goodness I was already in love with your blog but now I am super in love with your blog! I totally agree that it can be very easy for fashion blogging to become very superficial and narcissistic but for the record I have never gotten that vibe from your blog. I loved reading this post. I love animals and really like the idea you have, I don't have large audience, but I would love to help in any way that I can! Let me know if there is any way I can be a part of this or help out in some way! Oh and thanks for the great idea of carrying food for strays I love that!

So Strawberry Freckleface mentioned this post and I had to come right on over to read it. I am very interested in animal rights, veganism, and environmentalism. I have been wanting to find a way to creep that into my blog in a loving manner, one that doesn't preach to my blog friends. I would love to be a part of whatever you come up with!
PS- love your style.
